And then there is AI. A model is exquisitely sensitive to this. Feed it three versions of the same customer and it will dutifully reason about all three, producing output that is internally consistent and externally useless. It has no way to know which version is real. A single source of truth gives it the one thing it cannot supply for itself, a definite answer to draw on. This is why we are blunt with clients who want AI but still have their truth scattered across copies. The model will only amplify the confusion. Fix the source first and the model has solid ground.
Getting there is less about technology than about decisions. Which system owns the customer record. Which owns the job. Which owns the price. Once those owners are named, the rest is connecting things up so the copies stop drifting. If you only fix one foundation before reaching for AI, make it this. Real time visibility, clean processes, confident adoption, all of them lean on knowing where the truth lives. Settle that question and you will be surprised how many of your other problems were never really separate problems at all. They were just the same disagreement, echoing through every part of the business that had learned to live with it.
